Notes on the Use of the Tables of Standard ISO 7730 for the Evaluation of the PMV Index

Standard ISO 7730, which is also known as European Standard EN-ISO 7730, provides two alternative methods for the evaluation of the predicted mean vote (PMV) index: a calculation program and a set of tables. In order to use the tables, the operative temperature must be calculated beforehand. The impres sion is given from reading the standard that for a relative humidity of 50%, the two methods are equivalent, i.e. provide the same value for PMV, from the same initial values. In this paper, examples are given showing that the two methods are not equivalent. Differences between them are analysed and a proposal made to introduce an amendment in the next revision of the stan dard.

Economic impact of BACS and TBM systems on residential buildings

The paper presents the results of a study on the economic impact of building automation control systems and technical building management systems on residential buildings. The different functions considered by European Standard EN 15232 and having impact on the energy performance of buildings are applied to a test house, varying its energy efficiency class. The economic impact due to the introduction of each BACS or TBM function is evaluated using the BAC factors method, considering the real costs for the purchase and the installation of the components that implement the specific functions and the yearly energy costs of the building before and after their installation.

Criminal DNA databases: the European situation

In the last 5 years, a number of European countries have successfully introduced national databases holding the DNA profiles from suspected and convicted criminal offenders as well as from biological stain materials from unsolved crime cases. At present, DNA databases are fully or partially in operation in the UK, The Netherlands, Austria, Germany, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Switzerland and Sweden. AbstractAs detailed in Part 1, the most common Italian Technical Specifications refer to different design methodologies for design of lime-soil mixtures, some being quite different from those internationally adopted. Therefore, it seemed appropriate to the Authors to compare these methodologies, via a wide experimental program.It is shown that the Italian methodology of the National Road Agency is different not only from those used in Italy, but also from the main international standards. The experimental results highlight that a revision of that methodology is needed in order to bring it into line with what is prescribed by the European standard.
